Numbers of Edmonias

At the time Mary Lewis chose to call herself "Edmonia," the name was relatively rare, found only 441 times in the 1860 census -- about 0.0022 percent of all female names.

During the 1860s, she achieved fame in Boston and Rome.

By 1870, the census counted 883 Edmonias, raising the percentage to 0.0046 percent.

She achieved her peak of fame with the Death of Cleopatra in 1776 and 1778.

In 1880, 2395 Edmonias appeared in the census, over one percent of all female names.

The popularity of the name dropped after that, to 0.0038 percent in 1900 and a low of 0.0007 percent in 1910.

Edmonia Lewis was not forgotten, however, being listed often among African American heroes.

1920 saw the name rise in popularity to 0.0029 percent, doubling to 0.0058 percent in 1930.
